NOTES
CHILDREN
Grace Towneley - After the death in 1539 of her first husband, Robert Hesketh, Grace married Laurence
Habergham of Habergham, in Lancashire about 1543. She died a few months after this marriage. A brass
plate from the church of St. Mary the Virgin at Rufford, Lancashire records the burial of Sir Robert Hesketh
and his wife Grace.
Margaret Towneley - Laurence Habergham married Margaret after the death of his wife Grace. Margaret
Towneley was the illegitimate daughter by Sir John Towneley by his marriage to Jennet Ingham. The marriage
was never recognized because of her lower rank.
Sir John Townley - fought in an English army that invaded Scotland and was knighted on 30 Sep 1497; probably
at Ayton when the peace treaty was signed after the Perkin Warbeck skirmishes. He established the 1100 acre,
Hapton Park making it the second largest in Lancashire. Sir John Towneley is also known to have had several
illegitimate children by his mistress Jennett Ingham
1532 - High Sheriff of Lancashire. The High Sheriff of Lancashire is an ancient officer, now largely ceremonial,
granted to Lancashire, a county in North West England. High Shrievalties are the oldest secular titles under
the Crown, in England and Wales. The High Sheriff of Lancashire is the representative of the monarch in the
county, and is the "Keeper of The Queen's Peace" in the county, executing judgements of the High Court
through an Under Sheriff.
