Robert was the 6th Great Grandfather of Queens Elizabeth II through his son Robert Porteus to the Bowes Lyons family. He first married Mildred Smith 17 Aug 1700, a first cousin once removed of President George Washington. Their eldest son Robert was born in Virginia. She died before 1712, when he married Elizabeth Jennings, daughter of Edmund Jennings, governor of Virginia. In 1720, they moved to Yorkshire, England, where they baptised seven children at St Martin's Coney Street York
