NOTES
Sir Richard's Mom Isabelle died and John remarried Elizabeth? John died in 1399 Elizabeth remarried William Rigmayden but she soon died. Richard and his sister Matilda eventually became the wards of Sir Thomas Fleming; the Baron or Wrath. Sir Thomas was the grandfather of Matilda's future husband William Fleming. When Richards Father John died in 1399; he could not inherit the property until he became of age. He proved his age and inherited the estate in the 10th year of King Henry IV (about 1410).
Henry V of England invaded Normandy in August 1415. Richard served under Henry V and took with him two footmen and three archers, all five being Towneley men from the estate. In October 1415, they fought at the Battle of Agincourt. Other records show that Richard was one of the 900 men-at-arms who together with 5,000 archers defeated a French force, estimated to be over 20,000; at the Battle of Agincourt on 25 October 1415.
The movie "THE KING" was based on the life of King Henry V; and centered on the Battle of Agincourt. It was released in 2019.
Richard's son John was also born in 1415; he and his wife Alice later had a son Richard. Sir Towneley restored good management to his estate and acquired new lands at Dutton and Clayton. Richard began building the main hall of Towneley in the early 15th century. Later two wings would be added and the property enclosed. At the time it would have been the largest private house in Blackburnshire and firmly established Towneley as the main base for the family.
