NOTES
William continued building at Towneley Hall by doubling the width of the North wing.
His wife Cecilia was a wealthy heiress. When he father Ralph died in 1755; none of his sons from his two
marriages remained alive; so the estate went to his daughter Cecilia who had married William in 1735.
CHILDREN
Their eldest son Charles inherited the Towneley estates; but he died a bachelor. The second son, Ralph,
was to have inherited the Standish estates but died before his mother; so the third son, Edward inherited
and assumed the Standish name and as Edward Townley-Standish became Lord of the manor when his
mother died in 1777. There was a tradition that she founded a fair in Standish, to be held annually on
Saint Cecilia's Day; November 29th
Son Charles went to school on the continent; spent a number of years abroad before buying a house in London.
He became the most famous member of the family. There is a painting by Zoffany at Towneley Hall showing
Charles and his friends in his London home; surrounded by a collection of Roman sculptures. The collection is
now in the British Museum. Charles was an English archaeologist and collector of marbles. He was educated at
the college of Douai. It was about 1765 when he left to study ancient art; chiefly in Rome. He also made several
trips to the south of Italy and Sicily. In conjunction with Gavin Hamilton and Thomas Jenkins; he gathered together
a splendid collection of antiquities. His marbles; bronzes; coins; and gems were purchased by the British Museum
and form part of the Graeco-Roman collection
Edward lived at Royal Hall in 1789, He took the surname Standish in 1766 and inherited the Standish estate upon
the death of his mother in 1778. Then he inherited the Towneley estate on the death of his brother Charles in 1805.
Edward died in 1807; and as his brothers had already died; and he had no surviving children, the estate passed to
his sisters son Thomas Strickland.
