NOTES
Prince Charles was born in Buckingham Palace as the first grandchild of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Charles served in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy from 1971 to 1976. In 1981, he married Lady Diana Spencer, with whom he had two sons: Prince William and Prince Harry. As the Prince of Wales, Charles undertakes official duties on behalf of the Queen. He founded The Prince's Trust in 1976, sponsors The Prince's Charities, and is a patron, president, or a member of over 400 other charities and organizations. The death of his grandfather and the accession of his mother as Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 made Charles the heir apparent. As the monarch's eldest son, he automatically assumed the titles Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland.
Charles ascended the British throne on 8 September 2022, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Holding the titles Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, and Duke of Rothesay, Charles was the longest-serving British heir apparent, surpassing Edward VII's record on 20 April 2011. When he became monarch at the age of 73, he was the oldest person to do so, the previous record holder being William IV, who was 64 when he became king in 1830.
Upon Queen Elizabeths death on 08 Sep 2022; he became the King of England; and assumed the title of King Charles III
Camilla, Queen Consort of the United Kingdom (and 14 other Commonwealth realms as the wife of King Charles).
Camilla (born Camilla Rosemary Shand, later Parker Bowles, 17 July 1947. Camilla was brought up in East Sussex and South Kensington in England, and was educated in England, Switzerland, and France.
She grew up in The Laines—an 18th-century country house in Plumpton, East Sussex—and a three-story house in South Kensington, her family's second home. Her parents were British Army officer-turned-businessman Major Bruce Shand and his wife Rosalind, the daughter of Roland Cubitt, 3rd Baron Ashcombe. She has a younger sister, Annabel Elliot, and had a younger brother, Mark Shand. One of her maternal great-grandmothers, Alice Keppel, was a mistress of King Edward VII from 1898 to 1910. Camilla's mother was a housewife, while her father had various business interests after retiring from the army. Aged 16, she travelled to attend the Mon Fertile finishing school in Tolochenaz, Switzerland. After completing her course in Switzerland, she made her own decision and travelled to France to study French and French literature at the University of London Institute in Paris for six months.
In the late 1960s, Camilla met Andrew Parker Bowles (then a Guards officer and lieutenant in the Blues and Royals) through his younger brother, Simon Parker Bowles, who worked for her father's wine firm in Mayfair. In 1973, she married British Army officer Andrew Parker Bowles, with whom she has two children. Both children were brought up in their father's Roman Catholic faith, particularly during the lifetime of their paternal grandmother Ann Parker Bowles; however, Camilla remained an Anglican and did not convert to Roman Catholicism. They divorced in 1995.
Camilla was periodically romantically involved with Charles both before and during each of their first marriages. Reportedly, Camilla's husband approved of the affair, while he had numerous lovers throughout their marriage. Nevertheless, Charles soon began a relationship with Lady Diana Spencer, and the two married in 1981. Charles and Camilla began seeing each other again after Charles' marriage to Diana and the affair became public knowledge in the press a decade later, with the publication of Diana: Her True Story in 1992, followed by the "Camillagate" tape scandal in 1993, when an intimate telephone conversation between Camilla and Charles was secretly recorded and the transcripts were published in the tabloid press. The book and tape immediately damaged Charles's public image. Meanwhile, the media vilified Camilla. Their relationship became highly publicized in the media and attracted worldwide scrutiny.
The engagement of Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles was announced on 10 February 2005; he presented her with an engagement ring that had belonged to his grandmother. The marriage was to have been on 8 April 2005; but the marriage was delayed by one day to allow the Prince of Wales and some of the invited dignitaries to attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II. On 9 April 2005, the marriage ceremony was held. The parents of Charles and Camilla did not attend. Instead, Camilla's son Tom and Charles's son Prince William acted as witnesses to the union.
Charles was the only member of the royal family to have a civil rather than a church wedding in England. After becoming Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla automatically acquired rank as the second highest woman in the British order of precedence (after Queen Elizabeth II)
