NOTES
Peregrine inherited Towneley estate when his cousin Charles the Collector died.  In 1831 Peregrine was made
High Sheriff of Lancashire; ENG  - the first Towneley of Towneley to be so honored since Sir John Towneley in
1531.  In 1835 he bought the mansion of Slaidburn and the Bowland Forest estate of about 20,000 acres in
Yorkshire.  He lived at Towneley Hall and both he and his two sons played an active part in local affairs.  He had
the famous architect, Jeffery Wyatt, bring Towneley Hall up to date in 1812.  The changes done were; the Regency
rooms on the ground floor of the South wing.  Also many of the details on the outside such as the battlements
and turreted porch bearing the Towneley Arms are due to Wyatt.  He used money from selling his fathers book
collection to pay for rebuilding Towneley Hall
