NOTES
A grand child of Grace and Roger Nowell would be one of the attorneys in the witch trials of the early 1600's.
This would be Roger Nowell of Read. He was a fifth generation grand-child from the pair. Roger was born about
1560 in ENG; and married Katherine Morton about 1604. He died on 30 Jan 1624.
A brief synopsis is; He was the Justice of the Peace for Lancashire who in 1612 started investigating complaints by the
family of a peddler called John Law who claimed that John had been injured by witchcraft. Following a hearing on
12 April 1612, Roger committed four women (two of them blind and in their eighties) to Lancaster Gaol to await trial.
On 27 April 1612 he and another magistrate committed eight other people, 6 women and 2 men, to Lancaster Gaol
on witchcraft charges following a gathering they had had on Good Friday; (10 April 1612). Other alleged witches were
tried with them at Lancaster that summer and most were found guilty and hanged. They are known as the 'Pendle
Witches'. For information on his involvement in the witch trials refer to Henry Towneley (born 1541). The Wikipedia
Article on Read Hall, Lancashire states that it was Roger's son, another Roger Nowell who was High Sheriff of Lancashire
in 1610 and who was responsible for committing the Pendle witches to trial. The Wikipedia article relies on unsourced
websites which have confused father and son. The Victoria County History entry on Read has things right.
