NOTES
Charles moved into Towneley Hall when his father died. In the 1850's Charles established a successful herd of
shorthorn cattle at Towneley to meet the rapidly growing town of Burnley populations need for milk. The breed
achieved national fame as agricultural shows. In 1876 the Towneley estates in Lancashire were 14,086 acres. He
owned a horse named Kettledrum that won the English Derby in 1861. The local estate around Burnley and
Worsthorne including Townley Hall went to Charles three daughters; while the land in Country Durham and in the
Forest of Bowland went to John Townley's four daughters.
