NOTES:
Pinkney married his first wife in 1851.  He had two children and left his pregnant wife as he went to fight for
the Confederacy in the Civil War.  He was in the 2nd Battalion of the Georgia Infantry.  The 2nd Infantry first
fought in Jun 1962 at Cold Harbor VA.  On Dec 13 they fought in the Battle of Fredricksburg VA; a battle which
is remembered as one of the most lop sided battles during the Civil War.  The Union Army had more than
double the amount of casualties of the Rebels.  It is believed Pinkney joined the 2nd Battalion in the early
months of 1863.  Another major battle that the 2nd Battalion engaged in was the Battle of Chancellorsville
from April 30 - May 6, 1863.  The Confederacy was led by Generals Robert E Lee and Thomas "Stonewall"
Jackson.  The Rebels had an army less than half the size of the Union; but great strategy by Jackson and Lee
would once again lead the Confederacy to the victory.  This battle saw Jackson hit by friendly fire requiring his
left arm to be amputated. He died of pneumonia eight days later.  May 3rd's battle was especially brutal as many
men died on both sides.  It is known as the second bloodiest day of the Civil War.  From there the Battalion
move on to be in the Battle of Gettysburg.  This occurred from July 1-3; 1863;  and involved the largest number
of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the turning point of the war.  The Union Army held the
high ground; and thus was able to win the battle at Gettysburg.
The Union now had the Rebels in retreat; but still this group participated in other major battles at such places as
Manassas VA; Appomattox Court House VA; Richmond VA; Salisbury NC; Thomaston GA; Columbus GA; and
Macon Ga before the Confederacy finally surrendered and the war ended.

After the war Pinkney returned to Gwinnett Co, GA
and was a carpenter; sawmill and gristmill owner.
He and his first wife Betsey Hays (link here) had six children.  She died in 1872.
He married his second wife Amanda Austin shortly thereafter.  They had nine children.
He remarried once again to Nancy Roberson (link here) and had one additional child.
