NOTES
After fighting in the Revolutionary War it was customary for the U.S. Government to give out land grants. On the right is the grant for 100 acres Henry received. It states: After serving in the Army of Maryland, he was awarded an Army Land Warrant.
"To the geographer of the United States, or to the surveyors appointed by him to survey the military lands; you are hereby required to survey for Henry Townley a soldier of the late Maryland line; One Hundred acres of land, in any of the districts appropriated for satisfying the bounties of the land; due to the late Army of the United States and return the Warrant to the Board of Treasury agreeably to the Act of Congress, of the ninth day of July 1788.
Given to the War Office this nineteenth day of August; One Thousand seven Hundred and Ninety One"
